Lugol’s Iodine Solution

Lugol’s iodine solution in it’s original formula contains 5% iodine and 10% potassium iodide in purified water.

USE

It may be used as an iodine supplement or to purify drinking water, and as an antiseptic and disinfectant. In iodine deficiency, the dose recommendation is 6 drops a day for three months as a loading dose which is the amount of time required to restore healthy levels. After this a maintenance dose of 2 drops daily will suffice. Iodine levels must be monitored if high doses are being used for longer periods as elevated iodine levels can be harmful.

FIRST AID

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre 13 11 26 immediately. If skin or hair contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair with running water. If in eyes, hold eyes open and flood with water for at least 15 minutes and see a doctor.
